PROCEDURES

Weir Pest Control Treatment Procedures for Brown Recluse Spiders

In order to perform an adequate treatment for Brown Recluse (Loxosceles reclusa), it is necessary to perform a good inspection.  This inspection will then determine the treatment procedures that will be necessary to gain the greatest possible control of the pest.  The homeowner needs to be aware that once these pests have invaded a home that it is nearly always impossible to ever completely exterminate them.  The purpose of the treatment will be to eliminate as many spiders as humanly possible. And to then restrict their activities so that the numbers will remain as low as possible.  Because they are reclusive if we can limit their numbers then they will be less likely to invade living areas.  When we talk about control of these pests we must remember that the degree of control varies from house to house and from one environment to another.  In many cases construction considerations will lessen our ability to control the spiders.  Some of these construction problems may involve but are not limited to inaccessible void spaces between walls, in ceilings, and in other areas.  Some types of roofing materials will be more conducive to infestation from these spiders and will limit our ability to control their numbers such as wooden shake roofs, tile roofs, slate roofs, and where the roofs of additions join creating additional inaccessible areas, as well as other unusual construction types.  In order to gain as much control as possible there is a need for an ongoing and continuous regular pest control service that will be directed toward the general insect population.  By limiting the general insect population we can then force the spiders to feed on each other.  The general treatment procedures that will be followed by Weir Pest Control, and directed toward controlling the Brown Recluse will be as follows, but may not be limited to the following procedures.

  1. Thoroughly treat cracks and crevices especially around window and door trim and decorative molding
  2. Treat the underside of furniture where possible and where needed.
  3. Treat attic areas with residual sprays and dust products.
  4. Treat wall voids where accessible.
  5. Treat baseboards throughout residence with residual product.
  6. Place zone monitors throughout residence to monitor future population and distribution.
  7. Treat exterior with residual product to try and prevent reinfestation.

Customer will aid in the control of the spiders by doing the following items where marked to enhance the effectiveness of the treatment.

  1. Eliminate harborage areas where possible in attic and around perimeter or residence.
  2. Remove trash, especially building materials, around the residence.
  3. Remove articles from the floors of closets at the time of initial service.
  4. To enhance future control it is advised to place all articles stored in attics in secure garbage bags, (with twist ties not handle ties with no holes in bags), include boxes, clothes, and stored paper materials.
  5. Follow up the initial service with a regular quarterly pest control service.
  6. Move beds so that the air vents are not located over them allowing spiders to access those areas.  Alternatively it may be possible to block vents with screen wire instead of moving furniture.  (Copper wire mesh will serve best and will not rust).

BECAUSE OF THE NATURE AND BIOLOGY OF THE BROWN RECLUSE, AND BECAUSE IT IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMON SPIDERS IN THE MID-SOUTH, NO WARANTY CAN BE GIVEN OR IMPLIED TO COMPLETELY EXTERMINATE THIS SPIDER FROM ANY RESIDENCE OR TO GIVE YOU MORE THAN SOME DEGREE OF CONTROL.
